PBC 2009: April

This month I thought of something everybody can participate in (even without a lot of free time to solve tricky puzzles):

You have 2 weeks to send me the funniest/weirdest place name you can find.

One example: Crackpot (Grinton, North Yorkshire DL11, UK)

Of course you need some kind of proof and the name should be in English so that everybody can understand.

And the jury? That's me:->

Hi!

Okay, this time I find it a bit easier to participate, as I do not have to think a lot. My favourite and weirdest place name is of course:

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Anglesey, Wales
[ˌɬan.ˈvair.puɬ.ˌɡwɪn.ɡɘɬ.ɡo.ˌɡer.ɪ.ˌχwɪrn.ˌdro.buɬ.ˌɬan.tɘ.ˈsil.io.ˌɡo.ɡo.ˈɡoːχ]

I have been there two years ago, but please don't ask me how to pronounce this, I wasn't even able to pronounce shorter Welsh place names - maybe this was why we got lost more than once :-)

But on the village website (http://www.llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.co.uk/) you can find an entry called "How to say the Name", so try there. There is even a Say the Name Competition!

I definitely think, this is funny!

Good luck to find something better than this!

OK, here's one I've actually been to (well... I drove past it. ;-)). It's the alphabetically last place name in the US: the town of Zzyzx, California.

I'll see what else I can come up with. :-)

OK, here's some more:

If you're going for long place names, like Nadja obviously does, this one is also quite nice:
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu (I especially like the translation of this: "The summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his nose flute to his loved one")
Or the official name of Bangkok which is "Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit"

Canadians seem to have a soft spot for funny place names as well. This is maybe the only way to explain place names like Dildo, Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha! or Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump.
I also found some weird ones in the US like Accident (luckily just a place name, not someone's daughter's ;-)), Intercourse (a place with a lot of amish communities... xD) or King of Prussia!?!?
And last but not least some place names that will most likely be only funny to English speaking people and not to the people who live there: Fucking and (probably my favourite) Batman.

Actually I don't care if I win this challenge, just finding these places was lots of fun. :-)

ok, really not a lot of time to do this, but I propose some entries myself if not too late:

1) Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu, New Zealand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu) Longest name is actually the full name of Bangkok, but that is not really funny, it's just crazy.

2)Titty Hill, England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titty_Hill)

3)Toad Suck, Arkansas (http://arkansas.hometownlocator.com/ar/perry/toad-suck.cfm)

4) Fucking, Austria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fucking,_Austria)

5) Bastard, Norway

There seems to exist quite a long list of interesting names - not surprisingly most related to human reproduction coming from UK & US :-)

Well, I had a good laugh reading your comments. Some of the names I had heard of before others I had not. It's hard to name a winner... but, yeah, I think Dana deserves it this time.

I somehow knew that "Batman" wasn't good enough... If I found a place named "Chuck Norris", I would have won... ;-)

Ho, ho, ho, look at that! And I really forgot to check the winner for a while! What a surprise :-)

I herewith thank the jury for this honour, and hope to have the time to crack one of the difficult ones at some point :-)
