I tried to create a puzzle in the same way. Today I present it to you as the new Paper Boat Challenge. Here is what you should know:
- The puzzle is the picture below.
- The solution is a kind of saying.
- You can ask me for hints by writing comments and I'll try to help you.
- The competition will run for 2 weeks.
- The one who tells me the solution (and HOW you solved it) first wins the competition and as last time can determine a topic I'll have to write about (or you write something yourself).
I wish you good luck!

Hallo!
Ich schreib das jetzt auf deutsch, dann ist es nicht so peinlich, denn anscheinend bin ich zu doof für Dein Rätsel, denn ich habe keine Ahnung. Egal. Ich hab ja noch was gut. Was hälst Du davon, mal was über Studiengebühren zu schreiben oder wie schwer es ist, an Doktorandenstipendien zu kommen ;-) Ich sprech da aus Erfahrung!
@Nadja
*** FIRST HINT ***
Try to find out what is meant by the first 4 lines on the left.
I really liked your creative idea but sorry, you don't win the challenge with it;-)
You are not the only one who supposes it is one of those puzzles where you have to move all the parts so I'd like to put that clear: NO IT ISN'T. So please don't waste your time trying something like that.
Your translation is quite correct;-) So try to think where you can find 8 of one kind + 3 of another kind etc.
BTW: Anne showed me that you can find the right solution without knowing HOW. But I'm sorry, I can only accept COMPLETE solutions.
And to answer the question about the arrow: it marks "the start" after solving the left side.
*** ONOTHER HINT ***
The first 4 lines on the left describe a kind of sport.
Well, I am sorry, but the only things that have a kind of "sport" in my head at the moment are Tolkien, Rowling, Lewis and Pullman - and the only sport that occurs in their novels is "Quidditch", but there are only 7 in one team. Sorry, no "thinking capacity" left at the moment ;-)
Dude, I f***ing got it! ^^ After a couple of days looking at it occasionally and thinking quite hard (almost hurt myself ;-)) it just came to me all within a second! The four lines on the left describe a set of chess figures. The one with the unique movement is of course the knight. So I applied the knight's movement to the "board" starting from the lower left. What I got was:
"Life is what happens while you are busy doing other things" - *smart ass mode on* which is quite close to a line from the John Lennon song "Beautiful Boy" I think (googled ;-)) *smart ass mode off*
You are right: it's not "Quidditch". It's something people play in the REAL world. But regarding the number of members in a team, you are on the right track...
If it's not soccer, I am out - and it seems NOT to be soccer...
Eight players on the field - handball?
Three times two of a kind - ... (this point really sucks, got no idea)
Two times one of a kind - goal-keepers
... and everything twice - two teams
I stil struggle how we can use that solution to get the answer in the fields...?
Fabian, you are right in most of the points. Maybe it helps if I tell you that I wouldn't call them "players"...
Once you found out the right sport, the rest is pretty easy! So don't worry about the second step if you haven't finished with step one yet.
My head is turning mad already but I cannot think of any sports where a team comprises of 8 "players". Football - 10, handball - 6, icehockey - 5, basketball - 5, hockey - 7 Are you sure there is a kind of teamsport with 8 "players" in a team????
You know how crazy I get when I cannot find the solution (by the way, I have this problem with level -22 in Notpron since three months - grrrr). When are you going to post the next hint? Please not during carnval - this time is not good for thinking ;-)
See you!!!
Marion
Okay, I am not sure, but some of the comments you made seem to make sense know.
"Gerade Dir hätte ich zugetraut, schnell eine Idee zu haben" - well, if I am right, yes we played this "game" a few times and this year we couldn't, because you were in Mexico over Easter?
It's not 8 "on a team", but 16, so all in all 32? (8+3x2+2x1)x2?
"I wouldn't call them players" - would "x-men" be better?
Do I know the "sport" you are talking about?
YIPPY! Now I also know what you mean by: One of this lot moves like no other!
You are talking about the knight, which moves like no other man on a chessboard.
Solution:
Life is what happens while you are busy doing other things!
Am I right? ;-)
Actually it's not 8 in a team! And I really think it helps not to call them "players".
Hey!
I am not sure what happened, but I wrote a solution last night. So here it comes again - if you got it, but it is not published yet, well, just delete this one.
Your hints:
"Gerade Dir hätte ich zugetraut, schnell eine Idee zu haben" - right, we are talking about a game that we two played a few times, unfortunately not last year, because you were in Mexico over Easter!
"I would not quite call them players" - well, would "x-men" be more appropriate?
"It's not eight on a "team" - it is 16: (8+3x2+2x1)x2 so there are all in all 32 "x-men"
"One of this lost moves like no other" - well, if I got all the other hints right, this must be the "knight" on a chessboard.
And then I know how the riddle can be solved:
Life is what happens while you are busy doing other things!
Am I right?
the sport is Chess!!! do i win somehting
Vanessa
the solution explained:
Eight of a kind easy ...pawns in a chess board
Three times two of a kind -
Rook Bishop Knight
Two times one of a kind
King and Queen
... and everything twice - two teams yes balck and white
right!!!!
This is an answer to 2 comments which I can't publish because they would spoil the puzzle for the rest of you thinking really hard;-):
Once you've found out which sport is meant (yes, your answer was correct!), you have to go on with the next line: "One of this lot moves like no other. But how?" This helps to solve the riddle completely.
At least you could put my name, saying i got the right answer for the first lines
grrr!!!
Vane
This is depressing!
I showed your puzzle to my father and he solved it in half an hour (without giving him the hints and showing the comments!!!!!). The first "sport" he thought about was the right one and then it was more than easy for him!
It took me a week and a half and with a lot of hints to solve it - I should have asked him straight away and I would have won!!
Why do you tell me that? It's depressing for me as the inventor of that puzzle, too ;-)
