What's expensive, what's cheap?

Svenja asked about prices here in Mexico. Here is the answer for you and for everybody else who's interested.

I think in general you can say that food and services are quite cheap. Everything that's imported or things that require a lot of technology are almost as expensive as/ more expensive than in Old Europe.

But judge for yourself. Here is my personal pricelist of things I recently buy. He he, just kidding! But at least it's a pricelist:

  1. haircut - $40
  2. car wash - $30
  3. VW Jetta (remember in Europe this is Bora and vice versa) - $180 000
  4. W-LAN card - $500
  5. 250g of ham - $21
  6. Nokia 1110 - $400 (incl. 500 text messages and $50 credit)
  7. 400g of cheese - $26
  8. 1 liter of petrol - $6
  9. 1 hour internet café - $10
  10. having your shoes polished $20
Important note: "$" does not stand for US dollar but for peso, the Mexican currency. At the moment 1 Euro = 14,4 pesos or 1 USD = 11,4 pesos.

Hi Christian!

Sorry that I didnt contact you in the last days, but there are only two things I do at the moment: writing my thesis or doing ambulance services for the German Red Cross (World Championship requires A LOT first aid...). So I'll read your last posts in a moment of break and mental recreation. Currently Im working on my thesis and I just found the maybe most impressive term on Leo (a German online-dictionary) and I dont want to hide it from you :-)

>> der Schneidradprofilverschiebungsfaktor

(this means in English: pinion cutter addendum modification coefficient. Dont bother, I didnt even understood it in my native tongue)

I found it when I searched for the English word for "Anhang". Im not sure, yet. What is the correct technical term in literature for an attachment (the additional pages at the end of a book)?

For Fabian: not that I know German, but I think you mean "annex", that is what you have at the end of a book, or scientific paper, thesis, etc.

and Christian, the Jetta exists again in Europe too, the new version was launched this year or so. I know cause my husband keeps nagging about getting one. It has the same price almost as a Golf 5 and looks more like Passat, so it's worth it :-) Don't mind that I'm a girl and know things about cars, I used to work for a car company too, and doing press reviews all the time.

are you sure a liter of petrol is 60 pesos? that is 4 euros, if my maths still works.

well, keep writing, summer at work is not really the busiest time for me :-)
take care,
Dana

Thanks Dana for helping my friend with his thesis! :-)

Concerning petrol: Sorry, a stupid "0" at the end of a figure can change everything;-) It's only $6. I'll soon correct that.

And concerning the Jetta: I know it exists in Europe, too, but the car called Jetta in Europe, is named Bora here. And to make confusion complete: The Bora in Europe is the Jetta here although it's the very same car. Sorry, I had to correct you which doesn't mean I doubt you know about cars.

BTW, your husband has a good taste.

1-1 on the mistakes then :-)

and of course my husband has good taste, he married me ;-)

which brings me to the nice question that I haven't seen answered around yet. How are the Mexican girls? ...

Believe me or not, I knew you would write that answer :-)

And Mexican girls? What are you talking about? I have to work so much. I haven't even seen any ;-) ;-) :-)
